What inmates do there

The county says Work Annex crews handle:

  • clearing rights-of-way and roadside work,
  • grounds maintenance and drainage projects,
  • support for Roads, Solid Waste, Parks, the Animal Shelter and Facilities Maintenance.

Programs listed by the county include:

  • welding, with national certifications,
  • farming, hydroponics and aquaculture,
  • G.E.D. classes,
  • life skills and parenting instruction,
  • the “40 days of purpose” program,

Who is housed at the Work Annex?

The Work Annex holds people in Escambia County Corrections custody whose classification allows minimum-security housing and outside work — generally people serving county sentences, rather than people just arrested and awaiting first appearance. Classification staff decide placement, and an inmate can be moved back to the main jail for rule violations, medical needs or court.

A typical day

According to the county, Work Annex crews supply manual labor for county departments — Roads, Solid Waste, Parks, the Animal Shelter and Facilities Maintenance. That means roadside and right-of-way clearing, grounds maintenance and drainage work. Inmates who aren’t on crews may be in education or vocational programs such as welding, farming, hydroponics or aquaculture, GED classes, parenting or life-skills courses.

Work Annex vs. Work Release

They’re different programs. The Work Annex is a secure work camp where inmates work for county departments under supervision. Work Release, which the county also runs, lets eligible sentenced people keep outside jobs while living in custody. If a court order mentions “work release”, ask the Detention Division (850-436-9830) how it applies.

Finding someone at the Work Annex

Search the person on the official Jail View. A housing code of CRP (Work Annex dorm) or CMS (jail section of the Work Annex) means they’re at the Work Annex. Housing codes
