A short history

  • Until 2013, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office ran the jail.
  • In 2013, after a U.S. Department of Justice review found serious problems with staffing and conditions, the Board of County Commissioners took over jail operations on October 1, 2013, and created the Department of Corrections.
  • In 2014, a gas explosion destroyed the former Central Booking and Detention Center, which forced the county to house some inmates in other counties, including Walton County.
  • In spring 2021, the county opened the new $142 million, 840-bed Correctional Facility on N. Pace Blvd. and brought inmates back from out-of-county housing.

That history explains why older websites list different addresses — including North “L” Street — and why some records mention Walton or Santa Rosa County housing.

What’s inside

According to the county, the Correctional Facility includes:

  • housing units, each with a day area, recreation yard, triage room and multi-purpose room used for classes and religious services,
  • in-unit medical treatment, plus separate wings for juveniles held as adults,
  • video visitation,
  • an on-site courtroom (used for first appearance and other hearings),
  • a public bond payment and inmate property retrieval area,
  • compliance with the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).

Programs for inmates

The county’s 2017 inmate handbook lists programs such as GED/high school, parenting, computer skills, AA/CA and alcohol and drug classes, along with religious services through volunteer ministries. Completing some programs can earn gain time for sentenced inmates. The Work Annex adds vocational programs, including welding certifications, farming and hydroponics.

Frequently asked questions

Who runs the Escambia County jail?

Escambia County’s Corrections Department, under the Board of County Commissioners, has run the jail since October 1, 2013. The Sheriff’s Office ran it before then and still makes most arrests, serves warrants and keeps arrest records. Jail questions about bond, visits and money go to Corrections at 850-436-9830.

Is the Escambia County jail still on L Street?

No. The county’s current contacts list the jail’s Detention Division at 3080 N. Pace Blvd., the Correctional Facility that opened in spring 2021. The North “L” Street address still appears on many older websites and on some older county pages, which is why so many directories show the wrong location.

How many inmates are in the Escambia County jail?

The county says its corrections department is responsible for more than 1,300 inmates across its facilities, and the Correctional Facility itself has 840 beds. The number changes daily. The front page of the official Jail View shows how many people were booked in the last 24 hours.

Is the Escambia County Detention Center the same as the jail?

Yes. People use Escambia County detention center, Escambia County jail, Pensacola jail and Escambia County Correctional Facility for the same place: the county jail at 3080 N. Pace Blvd., run by the Detention Division of Escambia County Corrections. Escambia County, Alabama has a separate detention center in Brewton.
