What a "Hold" Means on Escambia County Jail View

A HOLD on an Escambia County Jail View record means another agency has asked the jail to keep the person, or notify it before release. Common holds include another county’s sheriff (for example “SANTA ROSA CO SO”), ICE (an immigration detainer), probation and U.S. Marshals. A hold can stop someone from being released even after bond is posted on the local charges.

Where holds appear on a record

Holds show up in their own navy HOLDS bar, between the booking details and the charges table. Each line names the requesting agency. A hold may appear twice when the agency has more than one warrant or case, as in “SANTA ROSA CO SO / SANTA ROSA CO SO”.

Common holds and what they mean

Hold text Agency What usually happens
SANTA ROSA CO SO Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office (FL) The person has a Santa Rosa warrant. After local matters are handled, Santa Rosa picks them up, or they’re transported there.
OKALOOSA CO SO, WALTON CO SO, other counties Other Florida sheriffs Same process: transport to that county on its warrant.
ICE / ICE HOLD U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE has lodged an immigration detainer. The jail may hold the person for ICE instead of releasing them.
Out-of-state agency Alabama or another state The person may be held pending extradition. They can waive it or contest it in court.
DOC / probation Florida Department of Corrections A probation officer has asked for the person to be held, usually for an alleged violation.
U.S. MARSHALS Federal A federal warrant or federal pretrial detention.

How a hold affects bond and release

  • Posting local bond may not free the person. If there’s a hold, the jail releases them to the requesting agency, not to the street.
  • Some holds have their own bond. An out-of-county warrant can carry a bond set by that county’s court, and you may be able to post it here. The jail or a bondsman can tell you. See Out-of-county warrant.
  • ICE detainers work differently. A bond in a criminal case doesn’t resolve an immigration detainer. The person may be transferred into ICE custody. Immigration bond is a separate federal process, and an immigration attorney is the right person to ask.
  • Transfers take time. The requesting agency has to arrange transport. Florida law and local agreements set time limits for picking people up on out-of-county warrants. Ask the jail about the expected pickup timeframe.

What families should do

  1. Write down the hold exactly as it appears on Jail View.
  2. Call the jail (850-436-9830) and ask which agency the hold belongs to, and whether a bond is listed for it.
  3. Contact the requesting agency. For a Santa Rosa hold, check Santa Rosa County Jail View and the Santa Rosa Clerk of Court. For ICE, use the ICE detainee locator.
  4. Talk to a lawyer about the underlying warrant, extradition or immigration issues. The Public Defender is appointed at first appearance for people who qualify on the Escambia charges.

Frequently asked questions

What does ICE mean on Escambia County Jail View?

It means U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer, or hold, asking the jail to keep the person or notify ICE before release. The person may be transferred to ICE custody instead of being released, even after bond on the criminal charges is posted. An immigration attorney can advise.

Can I bail someone out if they have a hold?

You can often post bond on the Escambia County charges, but the person will then be held for the agency that placed the hold rather than released. Some out-of-county holds have their own bond. Before paying anything, ask the jail at 850-436-9830 and a licensed bail bond agent how the hold works.

How long can a person be held for another county?

It depends on the type of warrant and the agreements between agencies, but the requesting county generally must pick the person up within a set period. The Escambia County jail can usually tell you whether transport has been arranged. Out-of-state holds can take longer because of the extradition process.
