What the money is used for

  • Commissary — snacks, hygiene items, stationery, clothing items and other approved products, ordered through kiosks in the housing units.
  • Phone time — inmates can buy calling time with account funds. Phone calls
  • Fees — Florida jails can charge fees. The county’s 2017 inmate handbook lists a booking fee, a daily subsistence fee and medical co-pays (sick call and prescriptions), which can be deducted from the account. Medical care is provided whether or not the inmate can pay.

Commissary rules (from the county’s 2017 inmate handbook)

  • Orders are placed through in-pod kiosks and filled once a week.
  • The handbook lists a weekly spending limit of $175 , with some items (like clothing, shoes, toiletries, radios and batteries) excluded from the limit.
  • Inmates with less than $1.00 in their account for 14 consecutive days can qualify as indigent and receive basic hygiene and writing supplies.
  • An inmate can release money to someone outside. The handbook lists a fee for this.

Details can change. Ask the jail for current limits.

Care packages

Escambia County also points families to icaregifts.com for approved care packages. Packages sent by mail aren’t accepted — only items from the approved vendor.

Work Annex inmates

Inmates at the Work Annex (Cantonment) have their own deposit page on the county website. Check the inmate’s facility on Jail View (codes CRP/CMS) and use the matching instructions. Work Annex guide

What happens to money at release

When an inmate is released, the remaining account balance is refunded to them, typically by debit card or check depending on the jail’s current system. Money deposited but not yet spent isn’t lost.
